What licence do you need to drive a bus?

The WA Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure categorises buses by their gross vehicle mass and passenger capacity. There’s no stand-alone bus licence in WA; instead, the bus you plan to drive determines the heavy vehicle licence class.

LR
Light Rigid licences are for vehicles with a GVM between 4,500 kg and 8,000 kg, or any vehicle carrying more than 12 passengers including the driver, up to a GVM of 8,000 kg.
MR
Medium Rigid covers mid-size, two-axle vehicles with a GVM above 8,000 kg.
HR
Heavy Rigid licences permit you to drive vehicles with three or more axles and a GVM above 8,000 kg. This covers full-size city buses, large tour coaches and long-haul services.

Feeling ready for your bus driving lessons?

Our bus VOC gives licensed drivers a clear way to prove they have the knowledge and practical skills to operate a bus safely. Employers commonly ask for this assessment before authorising a driver to operate company vehicles. To book, you must meet the following:

Hold a current MR-A licence or higher.

Complete an enrolment form.

Practical bus driving lessons covering vehicle handling, pre-trip inspections, road positioning and low-speed manoeuvres.

A competency assessment conducted by an experienced assessor. Manual and automatic transmissions are both available.

Allow 3 hours. If you require additional training, this is booked in two-hour blocks.

If you carry passengers for hire or reward, a current PTD Authorisation from DTMI. No medical is required for the training itself.
